The cost of drilling a borehole in Kenya depends mainly on the depth, drilling method, ground conditions, and the equipment needed after drilling. Easy Drill charges KSh 6,700 per meter for air drilling with mild steel casing and KSh 13,000 per meter for mud drilling with casing.
However, the drilling rate is only part of the total project cost. Survey, permits, pumping equipment, solarization, and water storage can add significantly to the final cost.

How Much Does Borehole Drilling Cost Per Metre?
The cost of air drilling, including mild steel casing, is KSh 6,700 at Easy Drill Borehole Services. Air drilling is commonly used in competent rock formations where the borehole can be drilled with compressed air and a down-the-hole hammer.
Where the ground contains loose, unstable, or unconsolidated formations that are difficult to keep open during drilling, mud drilling may be required. Easy Drill charges KSh 13,000 per meter for mud drilling, including casing.
We keep encountering formations in the coastal region that require mud drilling, and we always let the client know that it’s the only reliable method in that situation.
What Would a 100-Meter Borehole in Kenya Cost?
If your borehole reaches 100 meters and air drilling is a suitable method, drilling and mild steel casing would cost you KSh 670,000, calculated as follows:
100 metres × KSh 6,700 = KSh 670,000
If mud drilling is required, the same 100-meter borehole would cost you KSh 1,300,000 because:
100 metres × KSh 13,000 = KSh 1,300,000
Important: these are not the total costs of a complete borehole. They cover drilling and casing only. The final project cost will also depend on the hydrogeological survey, regulatory requirements, pumping equipment, solarization, and water storage if required.
Estimated Total Cost of a 200-Meter Borehole in Kenya
Using Easy Drill Borehole Services’ current drilling rates, a 200-meter borehole drilled using air drilling would cost approximately KSh 2.5–2.75 million before water tower and tank installation.
This estimate includes:
- Drilling and mild steel casing: KSh 1,340,000
- Hydrogeological survey: KSh 37,000–80,000
- WRA: KSh 25,050
- WRUA: KSh 5,000–40,000
- Pumping equipment: about KSh 600,000
- Solarization: KSh 500,000–650,000
- Test pumping and water quality analysis: free when you drill with Easy Drill
If mud drilling is required, drilling and casing alone would cost KSh 2.6 million, bringing the estimated project cost to approximately KSh 3.77–4.00 million before water storage and tower installation. These are rough planning figures, not fixed quotations.
What Determines the Total Borehole Cost?
The total borehole project cost includes the survey and regulatory requirements/borehole permit approvals, drilling and casing, and the equipment needed to pump and store the water.
- Borehole depth: The deeper the borehole, the more meters must be drilled and cased, increasing the drilling cost.
- Ground formation: The type of rock or soil encountered determines the drilling method. We mostly use air drilling, but if your situation warrants mud drilling, you’d definitely pay more.
- Water yield: A higher-yielding borehole may require a larger pump and a larger solar system, while a lower-yielding borehole may require smaller pumping equipment.
- Pumping equipment: The pump and motor must match the borehole’s depth and available water yield. Our pumping equipment costs about KSh 600,000 and includes the motor, pump, submersible cable, anchor cable, and other accessories.
- Solarization: The solar system must provide enough power to run the selected pump. At Easy Drill Borehole Services, solarization costs about KSh 500,000–650,000, depending mainly on the pump’s power requirements and the number of solar panels needed.
- Water storage: If you need a water tower and tank, the cost depends on the tank capacity, tower height, structural design, foundation, and site conditions.
- Distance: If you’re kilometers away from our location (Nakuru City), you’ll pay more than someone based in Kiamunyi or Kabarak in Nakuru.
- Casing: If you use plastic casing, you’ll pay less than if you use mild steel pipes. Most people go with mild steel because it’s stronger and lasts longer. Also, if there’s rock all the way down to the aquifer, you’d need less casing, and casing costs money.
What Is Included in a Complete Borehole Project?
A complete borehole project goes beyond drilling. It includes the hydrogeological and geophysical surveys, regulatory approvals, drilling and casing, borehole development, test pumping, water quality analysis, pump selection and installation, solarization or electrical connection, and water storage.
Do I Have to Install Solar Panels for My Borehole?
Not really, although it’s a really good idea and we recommend it. Some homeowners use electricity to power their borehole pumps, but a properly designed and installed solar pumping system can significantly reduce ongoing electricity costs. A good-quality system can pay for itself over time through the savings on power bills.
What You Get When You Drill With Easy Drill Borehole Services
When you drill your borehole with Easy Drill, test pumping and water quality analysis are free. If you need test pumping separately, the cost is KSh 75,000.
We also keep our pricing transparent, explain what each cost covers, and keep the process above board from the initial survey through drilling, testing, and equipping the borehole. You also get clear communication and attentive customer care throughout the project, so you know what is happening at each stage and why.
